Mentoring

Arizona Quest for Kids engages students through a one-on-one adult mentor relationship throughout the entirety of the program. A good mentor holds immeasurable value to every aspect of a student’s life: personal, professional, and community. The mentor is an additional support system for the student outside of the family and school. At a minimum, Elementary/middle school students meet for one hour every week with their mentor while high school students meet with their mentor every other week for an hour. High school students meet every other week because academics, extracurricular activities, and community service requirements are much more demanding. The mentor is a friend not a tutor, a parent, a guidance counselor, or a disciplinarian. The mentor:

  • Offers their life experiences to their mentees as a way to gain knowledge of the world around them,
  • Acts as a wise advisor who has been through issues that the student may be facing, help discover their mentee’s challenges and work together with the mentee to turn those challenges into strengths, and help the mentee discover new options that the mentee was not previously able to see,
  • Helps the mentee set and achieve short and long term goals,
  • Participates, when able, with their mentees in enrichment activities, community service projects, and program events.
  • Encourages and supports their mentees to think about college and to pursue higher education.
